Travel in Spain

When going on holiday having the necessary transport to get to all the sites and attractions is essential. In a lot of tourist destinations the standard of public transport is relatively high and is sufficient for getting to all the must see sites and attractions. However this is not always the case as some have poor public transport meaning other means of transfer are necessary.

The public transport in spain is some of the best in Europe and is usually very efficient and convenient for tourist travel. With a number of different transport methods such as intercity rail, buses, taxis and city metro services tourists very rarely find any places inaccessible on their travels. The state owned intercity rail network offers one of the best rail services in Europe to all the major cities in Spain and is one of the quickest means of travel from city to city. If visiting the major cities of Madrid, Barcelona or Valencia the city metro service is an excellent way to travel round. Metro cards can be obtained allowing unlimited access to the metro service for a number of days, allowing you to get to all the cities main attractions without having to pay for short taxi journeys. Before using the metro tourists must remember that at peak times the metros do get very crowded so be prepared! For tourists looking to travel a bit further than the major cities of Spain the best means of transport is likely to be a car. Using public transport to get to less accessible regions of Spain will mean a lot of stopping and changing, be very time consuming and possibly costly too.

Car hire is the best way to travel to these places as you can drive from door to door as and when you want. The best way to get cheap car hire in Spain is to arrange it all before you travel. Car hire in Spain is achievable but to ensure you get the best value car hire for your money it is best to arrange it before you depart.

What is the best way to travel from Spain to surrounding countries?

I am studying in spain next fall and would like to travel a bit before my classes start. I would like to visit France, Italy, Germany and Poland. What are my options for reasonably priced travel? Would it be cheaper to ride by train or fly? Do I have any other options?

"What are my options for reasonably priced travel?"

The eurolines bus, a Eurailpass for the trains, or cheap airlines like Ryanair, Easyjet, and Air Berlin.

"Would it be cheaper to ride by train or fly? Do I have any other options?"

The Eurolines bus is another option.

The train is cheap with a railpass, but expensive otherwise.

Flights really vary in price, but can be very cheap if you are flexible on where and when you fly since there are a lot of discounts at off-peak times. Just keep in mind that some cheap airlines use airports that are far outside of the cities they visit, and it can take a lot of time and money to get to them – I had a London – Amsterdam flight that cost $25 and took one hour, but the total trip from central London to central Amsterdam took a total of eight hours of traveling and $100 because I had to fly through Stansted and Maastricht airports – the cheap airline didn’t use the real London and Amsterdam airports.
